How the Site Works
EDIT: Please help build on this information based on how you use the site!
For the purposes of collaboration, five areas of expertise have been identified. You were asked to identify yours when you registered. They are:
- Coordinator
- Designer
- Draftsman
- 3D Modeler/Renderer
- Writer
This section explains those roles as they pertain to team-building:
Coordinator
Coordinators schedule and recommend task assignments, organize the workflow, are the points of contact with the competition organizers, and distribute information. Coordinators also typically submit the official competition entry.
Designer
Designers are responsible for the coordination of the actual design. The design process is of course collaborative among each team, but designers are ultimately responsible for the final design decisions. Designers design cities, towns, neighborhoods, parks, landscapes, gardens, buildings, furniture, and anything else that requires design input. One imagines that to some extent, everyone participating would be a designer at some level. Coordinators are responsible for structuring teams that recognize multiple designers of like and various specialties. CAD is generally used, but scans of sketches are not uncommon.
Draftsman
Draftsmen produce 2D graphical information. Teams ideally coordinate graphical preferences when multiple draftmen are involved on one project.
3D Modeler/Renderer
3D modelers and renderers use 3D software, such as SketchUp, to construct virtual models and renderings. 3D can be used as a design tool and a finished presentation tool, depending on the needs of the project. Coordinators can work with designers to figure out the best use of 3D for their projects.
Writer
This is pretty self-explanatory. Teams need good writers to effectively communicate the ideas that aren't readily apparent in the graphical presentation. Writers give projects concise intellectual context, an apsect to competition entries that should not be underestimated.
