“The Ohio Statehouse's "tremendous structural power presents a quality many state capitols do not have. This building does not mimic. It is neither a sham temple, nor a gilded opera house. It is a rich expression of the Greek-Revival that suits the national Statehouse brand of public architecture in a unique way. Sharing in these aesthetic qualities are only a few other state capitols...”—William Seale, Architectural Historian
OVERVIEW
The Institute of Classical Architecture and Classical America, in collaboration with Period Style Homes, Inc. and the American Institute of Building Design will be presenting the second installment of its “House Styles” course series the weekend of September 21-23, 2007 in Columbus, Ohio. The weekend’s offering will commence with a series of lectures and studio seminars by local practioners and experts in the field of classical architecture and regional vernacular styles. The introductory classes will provide participants with a basic understanding of classical architecture and an overview of local styles. Students will receive a primer that includes information on classical design principles, proportion, composition, and the traditional residential styles of Greek Revival, and Federal. Follow-up guided tours of historic sites will provide participants with opportunities to observe elements of classical architecture and how the deployment of its principles evolved and informed the development of unique regional styles. By studying a selection of both old and new regional style houses along with complementary instruction in general design concepts and history, students will learn to create better designed and detailed houses of beauty and value.
LEARNING UNITS
All class participants will qualify for AIBD CEU and AIA/CES Learning units as noted. Additionally, participants receive an ICA & CA Course Completion Certificate.
HISTORIC COLUMBUS
Columbus, named for explorer Christopher Columbus, is the capital and the largest city of the state of Ohio. The city was founded in 1812 and assumed the functions of state capital in 1816. Columbus has a number of distinctive neighborhoods within the metro area. The Short North, situated just north of downtown, is rich with art galleries, dining, pubs, and specialty shops. A number of large, ornate Victorian homes are located nearby, and together they comprise Victorian Village. To the south, German Village is known for its quaint 19th century brick cottages, and it holds the distinction as the largest privately funded historic district on the National Register of Historic Places.
STUDY SITES
Lectures, seminars and sketching tours will focus on examining institutional structures, land-marked housing
stock, and neighborhoods that best exemplify the Greek and Federal House Styles found in the city and surrounding regions.
BENAJAMIN LATROBE
German Village is a historic neighborhood just south of downtown Columbus, Ohio, USA. It was settled by a large number of German immigrants in the mid 1800s. Concerned citizens managed to save its historic architecture from demolition in the 1960s by getting the area listed on the National Register of Historic Places. German Village is mostly a residential neighbor-hood of sturdy, red-brick, working-class cottages with wrought iron fences, along tree-lined, brick-paved streets.

THE OHIO STATEHOUSE
The Ohio Statehouse construction began in 1839. A Greek-Revival building, it features a central recessed porch with a colonnade of a froth right and primitive Greek Doric mode. A broad and low central pediment supports the windowed astylar drum under an invisibly low saucer dome that lights the interior rotunda.
ADDITIONAL TOUR STOPS
In addition to the city of Columbus proper our weekend program will include a tour of nearby Chillicothe-- the first Ohio capital, and a prosperous and beautiful city consciously taking pride in its heritage. Chillicothe is one hour south of Columbus, and is the best city in Ohio for its population of Greek Revival and Federal houses. Our tour will include interior viewings of private homes.
Chillicothe is also home to Adena; Benjamin Latrobe’s only remaining house outside the east coast and one of only three remaining intact. We will also visit Mountain House which was built in the early 1850’s and was the home and studio of Dard Hunter, an artist, designer, and illustrator who became the world’s foremost authority on the history and craft of papermaking.
In route to Chillicothe we will stop off at a Federal Farmhouse designed on plans by Thomas Jefferson-- this stop will give visitors a true sense of the agrarian, gentleman-farmer culture that permeated Ohio in the 19th century.
