Classical Architecture on the Web
No love for McKim, Mead & White's Hotel Pennsylvania
McKim, Mead & White's Hotel Pennsylvania will be demolished soon, to be replaced by a tall office building by developer Vornado Realty Trust. That no one cares so much is rather disappointing but fitting; designed to complement the old Penn Station, it will be going the way of that beloved building -- under the wrecking ball. Most preservationists are keen on saving it's neighbor, the James A. Farley Post Office Building, also designed by MM&W. I think a reason no one cares so much about saving this building is that 1. it's not a public building and 2. in an area where no one lives. People are up in arms of getting stretches of residential neighborhoods like Greenwich Village and the West Village landmarked but since no one lives in this area, doesn't actually care. Anyway, knda sad, and here's an article in today's paper about it: http://www.observer.com/2007/lonely-fight-hotel-pennsylvania
