Paul Reid - Figurative painter.
Last week I visited a very interesting exhibition by Paul Reid at Hull University.
The quality of Reid's work is superb. His early work owed much to Velasquez; more recent work has had more in common with Titian but with a crisper finish that makes the artists work his own. The mythological themes chosen are often violent, but we tend to witness the tense moment before the horror rather than the act of violence itself.
Reid's work shows it is still possible to produce work in the mould of the "old masters" without resorting to heavy post-modern irony.
Some of his paintings can be viewed by following the link below. His latest work "Odysseus on the Island of Circe" can be found via the "paintings for sale" link and is probabley his best work to date.
