
SE ICA&CA Shutze Awards 2008 Design Competition
Program Criteria
The Southeast Chapter is pleased to announce the second annual design competition to recognize excellence in Classical and Traditional design. The Shutze Awards will be considered for small, large, and multi-family Residential design and Commercial / Civic / Institutional Projects. Additional awards will be considered for Interior design, Craftsmanship, Renovation, and Landscape / Garden Design. The awards will be juried by Clem Labine, publisher; Milton W. Grenfell, principal of Grenfell Architecture; and Christian Sottile, architect and professor at SCAD. Award Criteria
The awards are named for Philip Trammell Shutze, the Atlanta architect whose work is revered internationally as one of the 20th-century’s most devoted classicists. The awards will recognize similar individuals who are contributing to the creation of 21st- century Classical and Traditional architecture and related fields.
Eligibility
Work by members of the Southeast ICA&CA chapter is eligible for consideration. (The Southeast chapter includes ICA&CA members in Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana.) The individual making the submission must have the legal right to submit the work of the architects and designers. A member must make the submission and one can join the ICA&CA at the time of submission (see www.classicist.org). Since we are seeking current work, the submission must have been built within the last 10 years. The most recent projects that will be considered must be substantially complete as of submission date of November 16, 2007.
Winners
Winners of the Shutze awards will be recognized at an evening ceremony held on February 23, 2008 at the Academy of Medicine designed by Philip Shutze. The winners are expected to attend or send a representative. The winning entries will be displayed on the ICA&CA website.
Submission requirements
Each entry should be submitted in a 3-ring binder with end pockets. The entry form should be enclosed in an unsealed envelope and inserted in the front binder pocket. Nothing should be added to the binder that identifies the firm or individual making the submission. Binders should include a prepaid return envelope so the materials can be returned.
The binder should include a brief statement summarizing significant features of the project, site, landscape, and any details necessary to convey the significance of the project to the jury. Photographs of significant views along with plans and sections and brief captions should be included in the binder sufficient to explain the project to the jury. Similar explanatory information and images should be provided for interior design and craftsmanship.
